The attractions of the Festival are sometimes lost on residents of Edinburgh, who can often be heard saying there is nothing out there for them. But for those who often prefer to stay away from the Festival, a show about a legendary Scots actor may just tempt them to join in the fun.

The creator of the classic BBC sitcom Dad's Army has lent his support to a play about Scots actor John Laurie, who made his name as Private Frazer.

This year marks the 25th anniversary of Laurie's death and as a tribute writer and performer Ian Watt is bringing his show John Laurie, Frazer & I back to the Fringe. And Jimmy Perry, the acclaimed comedy writer who created one of the BBC's most fondly remembered sitcoms, is wishing the show every success.

He said: "John Laurie and I became quite friendly, quite being the operative word. He would frequently call me an illiterate Sassenach but he was a joy to write for and work with over a period of nearly ten years. Only after his death did I realise I had been privileged to have worked with a true legend. I was delighted when Ian got in touch about his show originally and I encouraged him to reprise it this year."

The show got rave reviews on its first Edinburgh run in 2002 and Watt said he was delighted to have the backing of Perry. He said: "It is a measure of his great respect for John Laurie that he took time out to talk to me. He certainly seemed to have enjoyed working with him."
