IN
2003 AT THE EDINBURGH FRINGE
APPEARED
IN HIS NEW PLAY
LEGEND
OF THE BBC
The
mysterious death of the most influential comic in Britain
A
tragi-comic tale inspired
by real-life comedians

"Everybody
in the business knew him. Especially the big knobs at the BBC
- Michael Grade, Bill Cotton they all knew him. Youll
be surprised at how many celebrities come. And the ones that do
come is it out of respect? Out of guilt? Will Vic be there?
Jo Brand? Ben Elton? Brucie? That would be nice. Theres
plenty of them have Freddie to thank for their careers. The ones
that are household names now youll remember them.
But nobody remembers Eddie Shit or Freddie.
"I wouldnt have believed it if I hadnt seen it
with my own eyes. But I was there in the studio the day Freddie
- the Keith Moon of comedy - fell from his seat, in the top right
Celebrity Square past Frank Carson - slap bang onto Cillas
lap. Drunk as a skunk. She was furious. She screamed at him -
Dont touch the star!
"Then he got picked for a TV series The Young
Ones. Youll remember all of them. Well maybe all except
the guy that played Mike. But you wont remember Freddie
in it. They filled the gaps where Freddie shouldve been
speaking with puppets. Hamsters, rats and lentils all that
stuff.
"They dont know what happened. The police dont
know. Some think it was deliberate suicide. Somebody should
have finished him off years ago. Id thought about it
often - but going through with it takes nerve. The bloods
really on their hands those people at the BBC. I just put
him out of his misery." |
"One
of last year's big successes, Ian Watt
returns with this
amusing and intriguing tale."
(Scottish
Sunday Mail)
"Good
script. Wonderful acting....a poignant, sad character study
of
a stand-up comedian coming apart at the seams.
As
good as - probably better than - John Osbornes The Entertainer....
I've
never seen such a serious, well-written play with so many laughs."
